Cyberbullying in Schools – A Growing European Challenge

Cyberbullying has become one of the most significant challenges facing schools today. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can occur anytime and anywhere, often leaving victims feeling powerless and isolated. Messages, images, or videos shared online can spread rapidly and have long-lasting emotional effects.

Research highlighted by the SafeOnline project shows that cyberbullying negatively affects students’ mental health, self-esteem, academic performance, and overall wellbeing. The problem intensified during periods of increased online learning, revealing a clear need for structured, school-based responses.

SafeOnline addresses this gap by equipping educators with the skills to recognise early warning signs, intervene effectively, and support affected students. At the same time, it empowers learners to develop empathy, critical thinking, and responsible online behaviour—essential skills for navigating the digital world safely.
